3. EPC Numbers

Retailers require and the DoD prefers companies to have a registered EPC Number that identifies a company much like the UCC assigned numbers used in UPC, UCC and SSCC bar codes. The number assigned to your company is called the Manager Number or the Company Identifier. You then have the ability to assign your SKU’s individual item numbers in the same fashion as UPC numbers.

What makes the EPC numbering system different than the UCC/EAN numbering system is its expanded capacity to serialize more than just pallets, but the cases and items them selves. The first step for retailers who are working towards meeting compliance requirements is to obtain an EPC Manager Number from EPC global, Inc.

There are special EPC Numbering schemes for different objects of identification. These include identifying items, cases, pallets, reusable containers and locations.

The EPC SGTIN identifies an Item or a Case. The EPC SSCC Identifies a Pallet.
